Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in building materials in the UK from the 1950s to the 1980s. Because of its durability, strength, and fire-resistant properties, asbestos was popular in construction projects of all sizes.

However, over time people realized the alarming health risks associated with asbestos. The fibers that make up the mineral are highly toxic and can cause serious damage to the lungs when inhaled. This damage can result in various illnesses, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

Despite being banned in the UK in 1999, many of the buildings constructed during the era when asbestos was used still contain it today.
