Asbestos is a group of naturally occurring minerals that are found in rocks and soil. There are six types of asbestos minerals, with three being more commonly used in building and construction materials: chrysotile, amosite, and crocidolite. These minerals are made up of tiny fibres that, when inhaled, can cause a range of health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

In the UK, all asbestos use was banned in 1999 due to the health risks associated with exposure. However, many older buildings and materials may still contain asbestos, and it is essential to identify and manage any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) to prevent exposure.
