There are three types of asbestos surveys: management surveys, refurbishment surveys, and demolition surveys.

A management survey is a standard survey that is conducted during the normal occupation and use of a building. The aim of the management survey is to locate, as far as reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) within the building which could be damaged or disturbed during normal occupancy, including foreseeable maintenance and installation, and to assess their condition.

A refurbishment/demolition survey is required when a building, or part thereof, needs to be upgraded, refurbished, or demolished. The survey aims to locate all ACMs in the area where the refurbishment work will take place (or the whole building if demolition is planned) and to describe their condition.
