An asbestos survey is a thorough inspection of a property to locate, record, and determine the asbestos type and its condition. In the UK, there are two types of asbestos surveys: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys.

• Management surveys are designed to identify and assess ACMs present in the property to manage their risk effectively. This type of survey is mainly used in non-domestic properties but may also be required in domestic buildings, especially those built before the year 2000.

• Refurbishment/demolition surveys are required before a property alteration or demolition work to identify, locate and assess ACMs' condition that may be damaged by the proposed works. This type of survey is also used when a property is due to be demolished.
