Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction in the early 1900s until its dangers were recognized. Its widespread use was due to its properties: it was highly resistant to heat and fire and was durable. Asbestos was commonly used in insulation, roofing, and fireproofing materials, among others.

However, asbestos is highly dangerous to human health, and prolonged exposure to it can cause fatal diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer. Because of its widespread use, there are still many buildings that contain asbestos, especially those built before 2000.
