Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used extensively in building materials throughout the UK until it was banned in 1999. It was prized for its fire-resistant properties and was used in a variety of applications including insulation, roofing, and flooring.

The danger with asbestos is that when it is disturbed or damaged, it releases tiny fibres into the air which can be inhaled into the lungs, leading to serious health problems including lung cancer, mesothelioma and asbestosis.
