Asbestos is a generic term for a group of six naturally occurring silicate minerals that are made up of long, thin fibrous crystals. The six types of asbestos are:

• Chrysotile (white asbestos)
• Amosite (brown asbestos)
• Crocidolite (blue asbestos)
• Tremolite
• Anthophyllite
• Actinolite

Chrysotile, the most commonly used asbestos, accounts for about 95% of all asbestos products in the UK. Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) that may be found in buildings and products include:

• Asbestos insulation board (AIB) - used for fire protection and insulation
• Asbestos cement products (e.g. roofing sheets, flues, gutters, downpipes, pipes and panels) - used for construction and drainage
• Pipe lagging - used for insulation
• Decorative coatings (e.g. Artex) - used for wall and ceiling finishes
• Flooring and ceiling tiles - used for acoustic and thermal insulation
• Textiles - used for fireproofing
• Friction materials (e.g. brake and clutch linings) - used in vehicles and machinery
