Asbestos is a mineral that was commonly used in building construction because of its excellent heat resistance and insulation properties. The use of asbestos in construction peaked during the mid-20th century and continued until the late 1980s, mostly in the UK and the US. It was used in a wide variety of materials, including cement, insulation, fireproofing, roofing, and flooring, among others.

However, it was later found that asbestos is hazardous to human health, causing serious respiratory conditions such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. Asbestos fibres are easily airborne and can be inhaled unknowingly, thus causing respiratory illnesses. Since its dangers were discovered, asbestos has been banned in most countries. However, many buildings that were built prior to the ban on asbestos still contain this hazardous material.
