Asbestos is a natural mineral that was widely used in construction, shipbuilding, manufacturing, and other industries in the 20th century. It comes in six different types, but the three most common ones are chrysotile (white), amosite (brown), and crocidolite (blue). Asbestos fibers are strong, flexible, and heat-resistant, making them ideal for a range of products:

• Insulation (e.g., pipe and attic insulation)
• Flooring (e.g., vinyl tiles, linoleum, and adhesives)
• Walls and ceilings (e.g., plaster, drywall, and textured coatings)
• Roofing and siding (e.g., shingles, corrugated panels, and cement products)
• Electrical components (e.g., wiring, panels, and gaskets)
• Automotive parts (e.g., brake pads, clutches, and gaskets)

However, these products are only safe if the asbestos fibers are bound tightly in a matrix that prevents them from becoming airborne. When the materials are damaged or disturbed, they can release asbestos dust and fibers into the air, which can be inhaled by humans and animals. These tiny particles can lodge in the lungs and cause serious health problems later in life, such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.
