Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction materials in the UK until the 1990s. Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were used in various building products, such as insulation, roofing, and flooring, due to their heat and fire-resistant properties. While asbestos is no longer used in construction, many buildings built before the 90s still contain ACMs.

Asbestos materials are harmful when they become damaged or disturbed, releasing microscopic fibres that can be inhaled. Inhalation of asbestos fibres can lead to serious and fatal diseases, such as lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
