Asbestos refers to a group of six naturally occurring fibrous minerals that were extensively used in building and construction materials, textiles, and other industrial products up until the 1980s. Its fire-resistant properties made it highly desirable for use in insulation, flooring, roofing, and other building components.

However, scientists have known for over 50 years that asbestos exposure can lead to deadly health conditions, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. This is because when asbestos fibers become airborne, people breathe them in, and the sharp fibers then embed themselves in lung tissue or other organs.
