Asbestos has been widely used in construction and building materials for decades, due to its heat resistance, durability and insulating properties. However, asbestos has been shown to be a hazardous substance, that can cause severe health problems when inhaled over time. Asbestos fibers are tiny and can get lodged in the lungs, leading to diseases such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The use of asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999, but many buildings still contain it, particularly those built before the 1980s.
